for Local Control
for Less Money in Politics
for Sarasota COUNTY Single Member Districts
On November 6th, help take big money out of politics and return power to the neighborhood level by voting YES on the Sarasota County charter amendment on single member districts.
What are single member districts?
Right now the five county commissioners that represent Sarasota County are elected by everyone in the entire county, including people that don’t live even close to the district.
Single member districts would change this, so that only the people who live in a commission district can vote for who they want as their commissioner.
Why are
single member districts
important?
single member districts
important?
Because running county-wide is so expensive, development interests that donate big dollars to political campaigns end up having a lot of power. That means more out-of-control development that diminishes our unique quality of life. Even in hybrid systems, with both at-large and single member districts, good candidates free of developer control cannot compete effectively for the at-large positions.
27 Florida counties use single member districts in whole or in part. Single member districts make running for office less expensive, giving development interests less control over your vote.
What would the districts look like?
The districts would stay the same shape as they currently sit, the only difference would be that only the people living in that district could vote to elect that district’s County Commissioner.
It’s a common sense approach to ensuring local representation and good government.
Who is supporting the amendment?
Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike are voting YES for single member districts.
